Vicks Chest Rubs vs. Natural Chest Rub

It's that time of year when many (MANY) mothers are pulling out the VICKS VapoRub to help their little ones breathe easier through the night.  You just may want to think twice before doing it.

Have you actually read the list of active ingredients in this product?  I have to admit that until my son was born, I really never did. I just took a look at the VICKS Baby Rub that I've used in the past on my children...mostly because they couldn't breathe easily when I had used the VICKS VapoRub. (My girls are now 8 & 10 and I had to use the baby brand back in Spring 2014 for the same reasons.)

VICKS VapoRub:
Active Ingredients: Label reads: Special Vick medications (camphor, menthol, spirits of turpentine, eucalyptus oil, cedar leaf oil, myristica oil, thymol) compounded by the original Vick process VICK CHEMICAL COMPANY Div of Richardson-Merrell Inc

VICKS Baby Rub:
Ingredients: Petrolatum, Fragrance, Aloe Extract, Eucalyptus Oil, Lavender Oil, Rosemary Oil.

Petrolatum, commonly known as petroleum jelly, is a byproduct of petroleum. Petrolatum is a soft paraffin or wax mixture sold as a topical skin ointment. It is acknowledged by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as an approved over-the-counter skin protectant and is used in the manufacturing of cosmetic skin care. However the side effects of petrolatum include finding the petroleum byproduct in breast tumors, suffocation of the skin, premature aging and aggravated acne. (LiveStrong.com)

There is NO WAY that I am putting these products on the chest of my girls or son ever again.  The U.S. already out ranks !

DYI Teacher, Co-worker or Just Plain Ole Friend Giftings

Every year I try to find some cute little gifts that I can make at home to share with my girls' teachers and our family friends.
And every year I fail in getting everyone on our list covered. *boooo*  This year I am again making a valiant effort to accomplish one gift for everyone on my list.  *YAAAAY!*  Say a prayer for me because with my 8 month old son it's going to be quite a feat to accomplish this year.

Here are some of the wonderful homemade gifts that I have come across in my searching for the perfect gift...not to mention easy. I hope that this list inspires and perhaps takes care of your search at the same time.

Merry Christmas & Happy Gifting!

PTSD Blend - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

My husband served in the Navy during the first Gulf War.  So many of our service men  & women have paid a high cost while serving our country.

My husband was recently diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome...which is not the same as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, but is still a price that was paid while in the service.  While the two differ from one another, we have a great deal of respect for all of our military servicemen and anything that I can pass along to help one will be shared.  There is something about being able to give back to those who have been willing to sign their lives away for our freedoms.  (It's the very least I can do.)

Teething & Flu...Oh My!

Last week was a real drainer.  There's nothing like  a 7 month old teething and two little girls with the flu bug to get a week started.

It started with my little James and his teething.  I'm convinced that teething is parental  abuse.  It's horrible for the baby and I hate that they have to go through it, but it's also a terrible time for the parents.

Sunday it all started at around 9:00pm with a fever of 100.3F.  Fortunately I had my arsenal ready with Peppermint and Lavender oils.  Peppermint to bring down the fever and lavender to calm some of the pain his poor little gums were experiencing.  It was amazing how quickly the Peppermint worked to start bringing down his fever!  Literally .5-1.0 degree lower within 5-10 minutes!

Tummy Troubles Big and Small

James at 7 months

As all of us moms know, tummy trouble does not hit at the best of times.  It tends to rise up in the middle of making dinner, sleeping or while we're out and about.  Neither do they only attack the young, but us more matured as well.

This is my little James.  At 7 months old I have had countless battles with tummy trouble since the day he was born.  All of my children have had tummy troubles as babies, my oldest Grace and youngest James had it the worst.  They couldn't tolerate my milk...which is so frustrating as a new mommy.  Our milk is supposed to be the best thing for them and yet mine caused so much pain.  Was I watching what I ate?  Absolutely.  I was ridiculously careful about what I ate.

A New Season And The Return Of An Old Love

Alright, I know that it has been a long time since I've posted anything but it's because sometimes my life is a bit hectic.  It must be said that turning 40 has brought changes in my life...a new baby boy, girls entering 3rd and 4th grade, and a return of a long lost love of essential oils. I love my family and will do anything I can to help us all stay healthy and functioning at the top of our game.  Sometimes it's harder than it sounds...okay, it can be a downright battle.

I feel so blessed to have an old love of mine work it's way back into my life, at what I feel is the right season, for me to empower my family with knowledge that can help change our daily lives.  Enter ESSENTIAL OILS

I have loved EOs since I was introduced to them when I worked in a little shop adding fragrance grade oils into lotions, shampoo, conditioner, massage oils, and more.  I don't know how, but at some point I let them slip out of my life.  What a fool I was!!  I just did not have an understanding of what was being sown into my life or how powerful therapeutic grade oils really were on a daily basis. Right now, I am most excited to see the impact they will have on my family as we enter flu season once again.

What are essential oils?
Here is a quick 2 minute video to briefly explain ~

Weight Loss Progress! 4 weeks

Yes, it's Monday and I am ECSTATIC!

Why, you ask?

The magic number of 211.

Look!

(I just realized that I forgot to write in my blood pressure on the 13th...138/86)

After juicing, doing smoothies and revamping my eating habits I have been rewarded with a 7 pound weight loss!!!  That's not a ton of weight being kissed bye-bye, but I do know that when you lose weight gradually then you are more likely to keep it off. And that's exactly what I'm planning on doing...Keeping It OFF!

Do You Know Chia Seeds?

Have you ever heard of the Chia Seed?

Did you know that there was such a seed?

When I first heard it the jingle for the "Chia Pet®" immediately hit my brain.

I just recently discovered some very interesting information regarding the benefits of these little gems. Benefits that I whole heartedly believe must be shared for all to reap the rewards they hold.  And at just under $7 a pound, that's a ton of seeds, they aren't too pricey!

My favorite way to consume them is in a smoothie...and the kids don't mind it either.  There really are a ton of ways that you can enjoy chia seeds.

Green Treat Smoothie

This is my favorite smoothie right now...it's packed with a little bit of everything for my body.  Grab your juicer and get to juicing!  If you don't have a juicer, your blender will work just fine. (it comes into play after making the juice anyway)

Green Treat Smoothie
Yields: 2 (16-18oz.) Glasses Blended or 1 (8-10oz.) Glass Juiced

Ingredients
1 cup Baby Spinach, or a handful
2 small stems Kale, or 1 large stem
1 Bartlet Pear
1 Gala Apple (increase to 3 apples if not adding organic juice below)
1 large Carrot, or 1/2 cup Baby Carrots
1/2 cup Pineapple, or 1" thick ring
5 medium Strawberries
1 Peach
1/2 Baby Cucumber, or 1/4 regular cucumber (cucumber is strong when juiced/blended)
6 oz. Organic Apple Juice no sugar added (optional)
A palm full of Parsley leaves (optional)
1 scoop Wheat Grass Powder (optional)

Instructions
Wash all vegetables & fruit to remove any pesticides.

Core apple(s), pear and peach. Remove leaves of strawberries. Core and remove the rind of pineapple.

Suggestion: If blending for a smoothie and not just juice, freeze pineapple, peaches & strawberries. Do not juice them, combine with juice and blend until reaching desired consistency.

Juice ingredients together.  Leafy ingredients need to be juiced at the same time with apples, cucumber, peach, pineapple or carrots.

After juicing, combine the juice and some of the pulp from the juicer's catch bin in a blender until reaching desired consistency.

Educating My Family On Nutrition

"Let Thy Food Be Thy Medicine, And Thy Medicine Be Thy Food." - Hippocrates

In my previous post I shared how I am on a mission to get healthy and teach my family to make healthy choices.  The wonderful thing is that both of my girls, especially my youngest, are so excited about juicing and finding ways to change our eating habits to live longer, feel better and be healthier. It's been music to this momma's ears!

Our TV has been running nutritional documentaries all week long...and we're all learning some very interesting information.  Netflix has been such a great tool for me in educating my girls (and hubby) about how important nutrition is.  If you have Netflix, go to the documentary section...that section that no one ever goes to.  The list of food/nutrition documentaries is small at first, but as you watch them the list begins to grow.

Making A Change For The Healthier

I am on a mission. Yes, a mission. For the past 8 years I have been on medication for high blood pressure and for the past 13 years over weight...and I'm through!!!

There was a time when I was obsessed with nutritional information, herbs and vitamins. It was a passion that I loved sharing with anyone interested. A way that I kept my body happy & healthy and my mind focused. Well, I'm heading back into that realm of happiness and health!

Do I recommend taking the steps that I did the past 2 months?

Nope.

Why? Simply because I weaned myself off of my medication without consulting my physician.  Atenolol has been my nemesis for years causing weight gain, dizziness, extended periods of being light-headed and irritating fogginess.

(Please, talk with your physician to wean yourself off of medications...I took a risk doing it on my own and I do not suggest that anyone else take the same risk.)

Taking Health By The Horns ~ Lesson 1: The Necessity Of Iodine

This May I will be 1 year away from turning 40.  Unlike a lot of women, I  view every completion of a year on this earth as a reason to celebrate and welcome the new coming year.

Every year that I grow older is another year with my family & friends. A year that more experiences have occurred and memories have been made.

So many people are having their lives cut short these days, so I value each and every day that I get. When I turned 25 I celebrated hitting that 1/4 century mark. At 30, the completion of three decades was greeted with a joyous, "Woohoo!"

Stretches To Help Alleviate Back Pain

Have you ever stood up and been completely frozen in place because of the pain in your back? Or turn onto your side in bed only to gasp and let out a yell because of pain shooting up your back and down your leg?  If you never have experienced it then I sincerely hope that you never do. It is one of the worst pains and you feel completely helpless.

I have had lower back issues since I was 17. It all started when I was shaving my legs in the shower and tried to straighten back up.  Never before in my life had I experienced a pain like that! One that turned me into a statue in a ridiculous pose and gasping for air while trying to make it all stop.  Who would have thought that something so simple as coming up from a bent position would cause such excruciating pain?

Well, Wednesday night I did it to myself again, but this time it was while playing the Disneyland Adventure game with our Xbox Kinect.  There I was going through the Big Thunder Railroad game, leaning to grab coins, jumping over and ducking under beams when on my way up from a duck  ZAP!  A pain of electricity shot across my lower back and straight up the center, then down my leg.  My avatar ended up getting pushed off the train, whacked by beams and just stood there like a dummy...while I stood there trying to find a position to be able to move toward my bed without collapsing.

The only other time that I have to compare this pain to is when I had my girls...and that pain was manageable since there was an epidural involved.  All of this pain and torment and I don't even get a beautiful little baby out of it!  It isn't fair!!

So, yesterday and today my best friends are the ice packs and my trusted heating pad. Ice, heat, ice, heat...that's the pattern of my day.  And in the middle of it all I'm trying to stretch out the backs of my legs (tighter than I don't know what) and my lower back.  AND IT HURTS!!!

Here are the stretches that a massage therapist taught me to do about 15 years ago.  I still owe her big time for the instruction. We all have so many desk jobs, video game playing, TV viewing...so much that makes us sedentary which causes our muscles to tighten up a be primed for lower back pain.  Watch the video below for instructions on how to do 5 basic stretches to ward off back pain.

Click HERE to view instructional video from WebMD.

I hope that none of you ever experience the pain that I am right now...and with the stretches in the video

Some Benefits Of Dark Chocolate

Anyone that knows me knows that I have a deep and passionate love for dark chocolate.  I'm so glad that I do...it's the only chocolate that is good for you.

AND it's a great tasting source of magnesium.  Ladies, have you ever craved chocolate during a specific time of the month?  Did you know that magnesium levels drop during a women's cycle?  Our bodies know where to get what they need from foods that we've eaten before.  It's amazing how we get those cravings...and most of the time just don't know why we get them.

I've definitely noticed that a drive for dark chocolate hits me every month...during "my time".  So I know that my body knows that it can get that magnesium it needs from my favorite sweet.  And I don't go for the semi-sweet chocolate...I hit the 70+% dark cocoa!

Fitbie's article gives a little blurb about how there is a link to those who tend to indulge in chocolate up to 5 times a week having a lower body-mass index. (per researchers at University of California San Diego)

And there are plenty of studies that have been done linking dark chocolate, which contains flavonols (containing antioxidants & antinflamintory properties), to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, reduce inflammation, and boost endurance.  All of these are areas that I personally need help in every day.

Valentine's Day Truffles

Valentine's Day Truffles. Send truffles to your loved on. Choose your delivery date. Low shipping.

Do I eat a big dark chocolate truffle every day?  NO!  Are you crazy?!  That would only lead me to demolishing my scale.  I have roughly a palm sized serving of chocolate a day.  Sometimes it's the 60% Cocoa Ghirardelli Chocolate Chips, sometimes it's a piece of a 70+% cocoa chocolate bar...on a very rare occasion it is a dark chocolate truffle.

An article on WebMD explains a study that was conducted to find the why you should eat dark chocolate and not white chocolate. To e it's a simple case of taste...dark chocolate tastes better.  However, the sited main benefits for eating my sweet of choice are lowered blood sugar and cholesterol levels.  That's all that I need to know!  My blood sugar levels have always been fine, but my family has a history of high cholesterol levels on both sides. That means that I have to fight a little bit harder to keep mine under control.  And there is NO WAY that I'm going to go the pharmaceutical route!

Read WebMD's article HERE.

Woman's Health also has an article siting 9 ways that chocolate can benefit your health. Again, it is in reference to chocolate that has at least 70% cocoa content.
  1. A Healthier Heart
  2. Weight Loss  (I would love to see this start taking effect)
  3. Healthier Kids (when eaten during pregnancy)
  4. Diabetes Prevention
  5. Reduced Stress
  6. Sun Protection
  7. Higher Intelligence
  8. Cough Relief (thanks to the theobromine it contains)
  9. Diarrhea Relief
Read Woman's Health article HERE.

They also have a PDF of the breakdown of the healthiest chocolates. Click Here!

I love chocolate...and the fact that it can help to keep me healthy is just a plus.  What a wonderful way to get antioxidants too!

Nose Bleeds 101 ~ Mommy, Remember To Stay Calm

Since Christmas Eve my little kiddles have been plagued with nose bleeds at least once every day. It comes hand in hand with living in the High Sierras and cold weather, but come on!  I need a break from the frantic screams and panic that come with each bleed!

My little Rose gave me a bit of a scare yesterday.  Okay, in all honesty I was ready to race her through the doors of our Urgent Care demanding immediate attention.  NEVER had I seen so much blood come pouring out of my child!  I honestly didn't think that it was possible for a nose to bleed so much...and for so long!  Turns out once I calmed down and remembered that I could Google for my answer everything came back into normalcy...with the help of Charming.

I was in the bathroom with Rose, who was panic stricken, and yelling orders for him to do searches for answers before packing her up to head to the Urgent Care.  One of the most touching things though was the fact that my Grace went into her room and returned with a book to read to her little sister while I followed my hubby's directions.  She even made facial expressions for the different characters to make her little sister laugh.  Then 30 minutes after our ordeal began, it was over.

One of the key things I learned was that the first thing my mother used to have me do is exactly what Dr. Oz instructs not to do. See #4 for this one.  My mom always meant well, and for me it was never a real problem other than having to make several trips to the sink to get the blood out of my mouth.

So, in an effort to help other mommies out there in the case of such an "emergency", I am passing along the information that I have now committed to memory. It really wasn't very hard.

In The Case Of A Nose Bleed

1.) Mommy, STAY CALM!  No matter how much blood you see draining out of your child's nose (and/or mouth), do not panic.  When they see their super heroine mommy going into a panic it triggers mass hysteria in the patient.

2.) Talk calmly and reassure the little bleeder that they are not going to die.  There is more than enough blood in their body.

3.) Grab a tissue and pinch their little nostrils together, firmly.

4.) DO NOT tilt their head back or have them lay down!  This could cause them to choke on or inhale their blood...not the solution to the problem.  In fact, this could cause a whole other scenario making it necessary to visit the nearest urgent care/ER.

5.) Apply pressure just under their nose and above their upper lip. If they will allow it, even better to apply pressure underneath the upper lip, right in the center, against the gum line.  There is a main vein that runs there and in doing this you can cut off its flow, allowing time for the bleed to stop.

6.) Wrap an ice cube in a paper towel and use it to apply pressure as described in step 5.  This will also help to slow the blood flow.

#4, 5 & 6 should be done for 5-15 minutes.  If the bleeding persists, repeat for an additional 5-10 minutes. If it still persists then you should contact a 24 hr. nurse line or make your way to the nearest urgent care/ER.

7.) Wrap an ice cube in a paper towel and apply just above the bridge of their nose, between the eyes.(A tip that my Auntie gave me. She suffered from bleeds throughout her adolescence.)

8.) Remove the blood clot from their nostril(s). Reapply pressure for 5 minutes to insure that the bleeding stops completely. The clot needs to be removed gently so that the source of the bleed can fully heal.  If not removed, it can all begin again. This is the part I have trouble with.

Great (Healthier) Appetizers (Dips Too!) To Ring In The New Year!

Let's face it, every little temptation out there thrives for the holidays. It's the time of year that is guaranteed for mass consumption of everything naughty. Cookies, cakes, candies, chocolates (my weakness), pies, nuts and flat out over indulgence of our favorite family recipes all add up to bloating, the scale climbing, jeans not zipping (or worse, not buttoning), guilt, tummy aches...you name it.

Well, I've decided that I'm going to start the New Year off with a much healthier mindset and game plan.  For starters, this year I am not going to be making high fat or high sugar appetizers for our nosh-fest while waiting to ring in the New Year.  I've scoured the internet and have come up with some amazing recipes links for my family (and all of you) to enjoy!

Happy New Year!
Here's to a healthy and adventure filled 2013!

This book is exactly the tool that I was looking for...a way to make some simple alterations to my life (and my family's) to get back on track to a healthy lifestyle.  My daughters are extremely picky (as a lot of youngsters are) and are in need of more veggies and less processed foods in their diets.  And let's face it, when it comes to kids and eating healthy we all need an army of tricks and knowledge to battle those processed food cravings.  She has a ridiculously good "No-Bake Brownies" recipe!
